When in Quebec… Eat lots of maple syrup. Seriously, I am going to miss this stuff. I laughed when I first arrived in Quebec at how they put it on everything. I mean EVERYTHING! Now I find myself using it as a dressing on my salad, glazing it on my vegetables, pouring it on my porridge and using it in my baking. The uses of it are limitless!
One of my favourite weekends was spent at a friend’s sugar shack on the first day of Spring. We pulled up to a snowy field in the middle of nowhere only to be collected and hauled on the back of a snow mobile. Soon we were gliding through the forest and eventually dropped of at their humble sugar shack.
The sugar shack reminded me of something you’d find at Hogwarts. It looked so ordinary from the outside but when you entered inside, maple syrup was in the process of being made and a friend was cooking a typical Canadian maple syrup breakfast for all the children and her friends.
There was such a bustle about this little Sugar Shack – I loved it. Seeing the kids running about carefree and having so much fun, nostalgia fell upon me. It just shows that kids don’t need to be surrounded by money and technology to be happy.
A crazzzzy amount of maple syrup was consumed that day and it tasted 100x better than any maple syrup I had bought in the shops. Smiles all round.
